In late April, Russian guard Ilia Ermakov signed his letter of intent to play for St. Bonaventure. He’s one of several international additions for the Bonnies this offseason, joining Achille Lonati.
Ermakov averaged 12.2 points, 4.3 assists, and 1.7 steals per game last season in Russia’s Superleague 1. While returning guard Dasonte Bowen and transfer Darryl Simmons II are projected starters, Ermakov brings versatility and length off the bench. At 6-foot-5, he’ll be one of the tallest point guards in the Atlantic 10.
Just 18 years old, Ermakov has significant long-term upside. With time to develop, he has the potential to grow into an elite point guard at the mid-major level.
“Ilia is mature beyond his years as a playmaker and brings with him the positional size, strength and savvy to go with his abilities as a passer, scorer, defender and leader,” said Adrian Wojnarowski.
Ermakov’s size could be a valuable asset this season, especially if the Bonnies look to play a more physical, size-focused style at times.
Projected starting shooting guard Darryl Simmons II stands at 5-foot-11, undersized for the position, which could present defensive challenges. Ermakov’s length and defensive ability give St. Bonaventure another option when matched up against bigger guards.
With training camp officially underway, the Bonnies are beginning to build chemistry and find their rhythm. It will be intriguing to see how the young Russian guard integrates into an already talented roster.
