Jacksonville University’s Robert McCray V has been named ASUN’s Preseason Player of the Year, becoming the first Dolphin to claim the honor since 2010. In addition to his league-wide recognition, McCray landed on the ASUN Preseason All-Conference Team and won Fan Vote Preseason Player of the Year, cementing his role as a player to watch this season.
After transferring from Wake Forest, McCray quickly became Jacksonville’s go-to scorer, averaging 18.4 points per game last season. He played more minutes than any of his teammates, with his total points reaching a team-high 589, the best mark for a Dolphin since 2015-16.
“Rob being named Preseason Player of the Year is a tremendous achievement,” head coach Jordan Mincy said. “It’s a credit to his hard work, but it’s just the beginning. Now comes the challenge of showing everyone he deserves it, and I know he’s ready to lead by example.”
Last season, McCray made his name known around the league, particularly during Jacksonville’s ASUN Tournament run. In the semifinals against Stetson, he posted a career-high 36 points, part of a record-breaking 97 total tournament points. His consistency was unmatched. He scored double figures in 28 games and dropped 20 or more points in 15 contests, including three games over the 30-point mark.
On defense, McCray was more than just an offensive force. He finished seventh in the ASUN for steals during conference play with an average of 1.2 per game. Last season, he snagged ASUN Newcomer of the Week twice and ASUN Player of the Week once, as he quickly rose to become one of the league’s most exciting players.
As he heads into the season with new expectations, McCray is ready to make the most of his Preseason Player of the Year nod and push Jacksonville University to new heights.
