Big South Team of the Week: 8 players standout

With another week gone in the fascinatingly even Big South Conference, eight players stood out from the rest. After losing to Asheville, High Point righted the ship and has won its two games since, including a 96-55 beatdown of Gardner-Webb. Winthrop outplayed Longwood in Rock Hill, South Carolina. High Point and Longwood will meet in Farmville, Virginia, on ESPNU on Thursday night in the anticipated matchup of the reigning regular season champions against the reigning tournament champions.

Guards

Jordan Marsh, UNC Asheville, Sophomore: Another week of basketball also meant another week of stellar performances from Marsh. He has simply put on a masterclass in his first three games of the conference season. Marsh is averaging 25 points per game and is shooting 60% for the first three Big South contests. On top of that, he is currently fourth in the conference in assists.

Mister Dean, USC Upstate, Freshman: Dean is the current co-freshman of the week in the Big South after two quality outings against Presbyterian and Radford. Dean had 23 points and eight rebounds in a win over Presbyterian and followed it up with 16 more points in a loss to Radford. He is currently fifth in scoring in the Big South as a true freshman.

Paul Jones III, Winthrop, Freshman: The other co-freshman of the week, Jones III had himself a day against Longwood in a 95-76 rout. The 6-foot-4 shooting guard had 24 points and three rebounds and shot 64% from the field.

Forwards

Kelton Talford, Winthrop, Senior: Talford once again showed why he was named preseason all-conference first team. He put up 17 points and nine rebounds in the win over Longwood and had 21 points and 10 rebounds in a loss to Gardner-Webb. In unsurprising news, he was named Big South Player of the Week.

Taje’ Kelly, Charleston Southern, Senior: Kelly and Charleston Southern only played one game this week, a loss to High Point at home. In the game, Kelly had 26 points and nine rebounds and shot 9-13 at the free-throw line.

Reserves

Kyrell Luc, Longwood, Senior: Luc led Longwood to an impressive 85-76 win over UNC Asheville where he registered a double-double from the point guard position. His 11 points and 10 boards were enough for him and Michael Christmas, who had 27 points, to down the Bulldogs. Luc played well in their bad outing against Winthrop, finishing with 18 points.

Kezza Giffa, High Point, Senior: Giffa, the reigning Big South Player of the Year and the reigning preseason player of the year, had 22 points in a commanding win over Charleston Southern. Giffa only had eight points in the demolition of Gardner-Webb in the next game, though he only played 22 minutes.

Breylin Garcia, USC Upstate, Sophomore: Garcia’s numbers did not jump off the page this week, but he still scored 12 points in both of his two games. Garcia also grabbed 12 rebounds over the span and was instrumental in the win over Presbyterian. Garcia is one of many new players to USC Upstate, as only one player from last season is still with the Spartans.
